Board overview

NVIDIA GeForce GTX 1080 Ti (GP102-350-K1-A1, TSMC 16nm FinFET). PCIe 3.0 x16, 6-pin + 8-pin power connectors, GDDR5X 11 GB (Micron MT58K256M32JA-100). Multi-phase VCore VRM with higher current demands than GTX 1060. Multiple PWM controllers handling different GPU power domains.

Power rails reference

Rails listed in measurement priority order — start at the top. Each rail must be present before the next can be generated.

Rail name Voltage Notes & fault hints
1V8_AON 1.8 V Always-on. First rail — powers all VRM enable logic. Comes from PCIe 3.3 V via step-down. Critical first measurement.
NVVDD ~1.05 V GPU VCore (higher than GTX 1060 due to GP102 power). Multi-phase, high current. Short = blown phase MOSFETs.
FBVDD 1.0 V Framebuffer domain voltage. Separate supply from NVVDD.
MSVDD 1.8 V GDDR5X memory VDD. Higher bandwidth than GDDR5 = more sensitive to instability.
GPC0_CORE_PWR 1.0 V Graphics Processing Cluster power domain — separate from main VCore on 1080 Ti.
PCIe 12 V 12 V Primary from 6-pin + 8-pin. 1080 Ti TDP is 250 W — measure with DMM under load.
PCIe 3.3 V 3.3 V PCIe slot reference. Seeds 1V8_AON via dedicated LDO/buck.

Common failure zones

Most likely failures first. Each entry gives a symptom and the immediate diagnostic action.

No power — fans not spinning
Measure 12 V at 6-pin and 8-pin connectors first. Then 1V8_AON. If 1V8_AON absent: LDO or PCIe 3.3 V missing.
Short on NVVDD
Very common on 1080 Ti. Multi-phase MOSFET failure. Disconnect PCIe 12 V and measure NVVDD resistance to GND. <10Ω = shorted phase.
Artefacts / corruption on screen
GDDR5X failure. High bandwidth makes it sensitive to slight MSVDD variation. Check MSVDD ripple on scope. Reball memory.
Crashes under gaming load only
Thermal issue (GP102 hotspot) or power delivery instability. Check 12 V sag under load. Measure NVVDD under full load.
One 8-pin not delivering power
Check PCI-E power connector contacts. Some 1080 Ti failures are caused by connector melting from high contact resistance.
