Power rails reference

Rails listed in measurement priority order — start at the top. Each rail must be present before the next can be generated.

Rail name Voltage Notes & fault hints
PPBUS_G3H 8.5–12.6 V Main bus rail. From ISL6259 (adapter/battery). Measure first. Absent = ISL6259 fault or no battery/adapter.
SMC_BC_ACOK 3.3 V Adapter detected signal from ISL6259 to SMC. Absent despite good adapter = ISL6259 or F7030 fuse.
PP3V3_S5 3.3 V Standby 3.3 V. SMC-generated. First soft-power rail. Short here = system won't POST.
PP5V_S5 5.0 V Standby 5 V. Generated from PPBUS via SMC enable. Check R7050 enable resistor.
PP3V3_S0 3.3 V Active 3.3 V. Requires full S0 state. Absent = CPU not booting or thermal shutdown.
PP5V_S0 5.0 V Active 5 V. Feeds USB, SD card, MagSafe LED.
PP1V5_S0 1.5 V DDR3L memory voltage. If absent: memory bus won't initialise.
PPVCORE_S0 0.7–1.2 V CPU VCore (Intel Haswell VID-programmed). Varies with CPU load state.

Common failure zones

Most likely failures first. Each entry gives a symptom and the immediate diagnostic action.

No charging — ISL6259 fault
Measure SMC_BC_ACOK first. If absent: check F7030 fuse and ISL6259 pins 6+7 (VBAT sense). Dead ISL6259 is very common on A1502.
No backlight — screen image visible
LP8550 backlight boost IC failure. Measure PPBUS_G3H to LP8550 pin 1. Check BLEN signal from GPU. Check backlight fuse (F9700).
No power — PPBUS_G3H present
SMC not enabling PP3V3_S5. Check SMC_ADAPTER_EN signal. Measure U7000 enable pin. Common after liquid damage.
Short on PP3V3_S5
Measure resistance with board off. Remove capacitors around PP3V3_S5 bus to isolate. Liquid damage under SMC area most common.
Kernel panic — random crashes
Check PP1V5_S0 stability under load. Failing DDR3L or instability in memory voltage rail. Also check thermal paste.
